Rohan D’Souza is an associate professor in the Departments of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Health Research Methods, Evidence and Impact, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario. He has a cross appointment with the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and the Institute of Medical Sciences at the University of Toronto, Ontario. Rohan’s clinical and research interests include reducing severe maternal morbidity, optimizing pregnancy outcomes for individuals with medical disorders, incorporating values and preferences of pregnant individuals into clinical decision making and standardizing outcome reporting in obstetric studies.

Laurie Richardson
Laurie Richardson is a Project Coordinator supporting Dr. Rohan D’Souza and several research initiatives within McMaster University’s Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. She manages project logistics, operations, and engagement activities across multidisciplinary teams, ensuring seamless coordination and execution of research, meetings, and events. Laurie brings strong organizational and communication skills to her role, contributing to high-impact projects aimed at improving maternal and perinatal health in Canada.

CanOSS-Ontario
Rashid Ahmed
Rash has a BScH in Ecology from Queen’s University, a MSc in Epidemiology specializing in population and public health and health economics from the Health Research Methodology Program at McMaster University, and a diploma in Applied Community Epidemiology from Community Information and Epidemiological Technologies. He has worked at McMaster since 2001 at the Population Health Research Institute and with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is also the Research Manager for the McMaster Midwifery Research Centre. Rash’s interests are in high risk obstetric epidemiology, midwifery research, public health program development, data infrastructures, clinical trials, population health, and health economics.

CanOSS-Ontario
Paige Gehrke is a qualitative researcher and registered nurse, with a diverse range of clinical and research experience. Paige holds a BScN from Western University, a Critical Care Nursing certificate from Niagara College, a MScN-Thesis from McMaster University, and is currently a Healthcare Improvement Fellow at the Centre for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety at the University of Toronto. Through her work, Paige endeavors to optimize health system processes to foster safe and positive experiences for clinicians, patients, and families. As a CanOSS-Ontario research coordinator, Paige is primarily responsible for leading qualitative research that informs system design, implementation, and evaluation. She also fosters collaboration with partner networks and organizations, creates and mobilizes knowledge translation materials, and develops data collection forms and processes.

CaNCaM-Preg: CanCOB
Angela is a research coordinator and registered nurse with over 24 years of diversified
clinical and research experience. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the
University of Toronto and has dedicated her career to advancing health outcomes
through evidence-based practice and compassionate care.
Angela’s global health experience includes living and working in Uganda, East Africa,
where she served as a regional community health nurse supporting families in underserved communities. She continues to travel to under-resourced areas, contributing to maternal health initiatives that promote safety, education, and equitable access to respectful care.
Angela is deeply passional about promoting safe, respectful and inclusive maternal care for all individuals. Through her role with CanOSS, she brings both expertise and advocacy to support improved obstetric outcomes across Canada.

CaNCaM-Preg
Josie Chundamala is the Program Manager for CaNCaM-Preg. She has over 20 years of health research experience with a passion and interest in women's health in particular. Josie has been working with Dr. D'Souza for over 10 years now primarily assisting with grants and publications. In her current role, she works on a Casual basis to assist with the overall general organization of CaNCaM-Preg specifically with regards to reports, contracts, budgets, and timelines.

CanOSS - Indigenous data governance
Serafina Shirt is a researcher and policy professional with training in Indigenous quantitative research, community-based research, and Indigenous health Systems. She holds a Master of Education and is completing a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
Within CanOSS, Serafina supports coordination across the Ontario team, contributing to data governance processes, stakeholder engagement, and project implementation. Her work focuses on strengthening culturally grounded approaches to data collection, improving research partnerships, and supporting system-level improvements for Indigenous maternal and perinatal health

CanOSS - Equity and Accessibility
Menna holds a Bachelor’s degree in Dental Surgery, a Graduate Diploma in Applied Health Sciences from Western University, and an MSc in Global Health from McMaster University. She is passionate about advancing health equity, designing person-centered health systems, and improving access to high-quality healthcare services for underserved communities. At the Flourish Lab, Menna’s work focuses on improving equitable access to health care, including leading components related to mobile clinic models in Northern Ontario and Manitoba, as well as supporting a needs assessment for service delivery in Namibia.

CanOSS - Education and Evidence Synthesis
Janki Pandya is a Research Coordinator, Education & Evidence Synthesis, with extensive clinical and academic experience in obstetrics and gynaecology. She served for over 12 years as an Assistant Professor in India, where she was engaged in clinical teaching, patient care, surgical services, and maternal health initiatives. She recently completed a Master’s in Health Research Methodology at McMaster University, focusing on adaptive clinical trial designs.
Her research interests include maternal health and maternal morbidity, with prior projects on anaemia in pregnancy, obstetric hysterectomy, and surgical treatments for abortion care. Within CanOSS, Janki contributes to projects on implementing recommendations for postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) in Ontario and Comparing Canadian guidelines for PPH, with the aim of strengthening maternal health research and advancing impactful outcomes.

CanOSS - Knowledge Translation and Implementation
Ahmad Mauluddin, is a health research and evaluation professional with expertise in knowledge translation, implementation science, and system development in Canadian and international health settings. He has led multi-site research initiatives, developed digital data and monitoring systems, and contributed to evaluations and analytics projects that inform evidence-based practice. His training and experience span public health, e-health, quantitative and qualitative research, health informatics, and participatory system design.
Within FLOURISH Lab, Ahmad supports the co-design and implementation of the CanOSS initiative. He contributes to developing system workflows, data collection tools, and monitoring processes, while coordinating stakeholder engagement to ensure the system meets user and operational needs. He applies evidence-informed strategies to enhance system adoption and sustainability and facilitates knowledge translation to promote the use of insights in practice and policy.

Bakhtawar has a BScN from Aga Khan University Pakistan in 2014. She also has a Master of Science in Health Policy and Management from Aga Khan University Pakistan in 2020. She is currently a PhD student of the Global Health Program at McMaster University (2023-2027)

Shahab Sayfi
Shahab earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, which provided a strong foundation in research methodologies. He is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Health Research Methodology, with a focus on evidence-based medicine. His primary interests lie in systematic reviews and the development of Clinical Practice Guidelines. Shahab contributes as a systematic reviewer to projects focused on falling insulin requirements in pregnant women and anticoagulation management for pregnant women with mechanical heart valves.

Culturally and Linguistically Sensitive Interventions to Support Maternity Care of Immigrant Women

onfidence Project
Kiran Nabil is an international medical doctor from Pakistan and a former research assistant for the D’Souza lab. Kiran worked on the Covid-19 and Pregnancy outcomes: An Umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analysis project. Kiran is currently enrolled in the PaCER research program at the University of Calgary, working for the maternal health team sponsored by Dr. D’Souza, on the Understanding pregnancy-related morbidity from a multicultural, family-centred, Canadian perspective project. She also completed Clinical Research Associate (CCRA) certification from McMaster University, in 202, and works as a research assistant at the Federation of Black Canadians in a Covid-19 qualitative research project Resiliency during Covid-19.

INOSS
Bronte is a Research Assistant in the D’Souza Lab who is working to understanding the impacts of enhanced obstetrical surveillance systems on maternal morbidity and mortality globally. In addition to her work in the D’Souza Lab, she is a Part-Time Instructor in the Bachelor of Health Sciences Program at McMaster University. Bronte completed her BHSc and MSc here at McMaster and is currently a PhD student in the School of Population and Public Health at the University of British Columbia where her doctoral work focuses on identifying and addressing contraception barriers for Vancouver Island Youth.

INOSS
Dr. Poonam Samyal is a trained Obstetrician and Gynecologist from India, where she completed her residency and gained extensive experience in women’s health, high-risk pregnancies, and gynecological surgery. After relocating to Canada, she became ECFMG certified and expanded her focus to include clinical research aimed at advancing maternal and fetal healthcare outcomes.
Currently, Dr. Poonam is engaged in several impactful research projects, including investigating factors associated with incomplete visualization of fetal anatomy at the mid-trimester scan, and contributing to a living systematic review evaluating the global impact of enhanced obstetrical surveillance systems through the International Network of Obstetric Survey Systems (INOSS). Her work aims to improve maternal-fetal care by promoting evidence-based practices and identifying strategies for reducing maternal and neonatal morbidity.
Post-Doctoral Fellows

OROS
Rachel Dadouch
Rachel Dadouch conducts research in obesity in pregnancy, among other maternal fetal medicine topics. One of the main projects she currently works on is the development of a core outcomes set for studies on obesity in pregnancy (COSSOPP). She recently defended her PhD at the University of Toronto’s Institute of Medical Science, which focused on a narrative study exploring clinical encounters between plus-size patients and their healthcare professionals (HCPs) and the communication challenges that arise. Rachel’s next steps involve advancing the knowledge translation of this work.

OROS
Tiffany Yeretsian
Tiffany received her medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2023 and her Graduate Diploma in Clinical Epidemiology from McMaster University in 2025. As a member of the FLOURISH Lab, her research primarily focuses on developing core outcome sets for vasa previa, placenta accreta spectrum, critical illness in obstetrics, and pregnancy-associated venous thromboembolism. These core outcome sets aim to ensure the incorporation of patient-important outcomes in future research, enable data harmonization, improve evidence synthesis, and facilitate the development of clinical practice guidelines.
Always seeking to enhance her research skills, Tiffany is also working on a systematic review comparing the safety and efficacy of oral misoprostol and vaginal dinoprostone for labour induction. Tiffany is passionate about the field of obstetrics and gynecology and is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of women, trans, and gender-diverse individuals through her clinical work and academic endeavors.
Graduate Students

Outpatient Labour Induction
Mahya is a MSc student in the Health Research Methodology program at the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact, McMaster University. She is currently working as a Research Assistant in the FLOURISH lab. Mahya received her Bachelor’s degree in Midwifery and had worked as a Registered Midwife and Research Assistant in Iran for almost four years. Her research interests are maternal and fetal health and reproductive health. As her Master’s thesis project, she is working on a systematic review and network meta-analysis on outpatient cervical ripening methods.

Agrochemicals
Shakil Ahmed
Shakil, a medical graduate and a master of public health from Bangladesh, joined Dr. D’Souza’s lab as an MSc candidate of Health Research Methodology Program at McMaster University in Fall 2023. His research interests include maternal and child health, reproductive health and health systems of developing and underdeveloped countries. He will complete his master’s thesis on adverse pregnancy outcomes under the supervision of Dr. Rohan D’Souza.

Climate Change
Vedha Viyas is an electronics and biomedical engineer, who completed his Masters in Global Health. He has been a part of FLOURISH Lab since 2023 and has joined as MSc student in the Health Research Methodology program since Fall’ 2024.

BMI/GWG and NDO
Dr. Medha Goyal is a second-year fellow in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at McMaster Children’s Hospital. She completed her General Pediatrics and Neonatology (DM) training in India before relocating to Canada to further specialize in neonatal care. Dr. Goyal is dedicated to caring for critically ill newborns, focusing on neonatal brain development in both term and preterm infants.
In her current research, Dr. Goyal explores the impact of maternal health and antenatal exposures on long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes in early childhood as part of the FLOURISH lab at McMaster. Her research aims to expand our understanding of the factors that influence early brain development and improve neonatal care practices for better long-term outcomes. Combining her clinical expertise with a strong research focus, Dr. Goyal is committed to advancing neonatal medicine and improving care practices that optimize both short-term and long-term outcomes for newborns and their families.

Rizwana Ashraf
Rizwana joined our team as a research associate in 2019. She is an international medical graduate and a Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada. She also completed the Clinical Research Certification Program from Michener Institute in 2020. Rizwana is passionate about working with the research team and providing meaningful contribution in improving women’s health and reducing maternal morbidity. She is currently also a graduate student in the Health Research Methodology program at McMaster University.

LMWH Access
Emma is a first year graduate student in the public health program. She is currently working on the Canadian (CanOSS) and International (INOSS) Obstetric Survey Systems projects, in gathering data on maternal morbidity and mortality case review around the world. She is also assisting a qualitative study titled, “Maternal Morbidity in Marginalized Communities,” which seeks to understand the unique pregnancy challenges faced by people identifying as LGBTQ2IA+ or living with disabilities.
